Chef Marc Vetri of Vetri, Osteria, Lo Spiedo and Amis Trattoria is behind this Italian gastropub just off North Broad Street. The look is casual with an urban edge --- garage door-style windows roll up in the warm weather months to reveal walls decorated by a professional graffiti artist. The hearty food is ideal for passing around the table and pairing with Alla Spina’s local craft brews and bottled Italian beers. Fried pig tails with fennel agrodolce set the tone for adventurous eaters, who also will want to sample the charred squid pasta salad. Alla Spina offers its own riffs on familiar bar snacks, too, including house-made pretzels with spicy beer cheese. It balances out the fried food category with lighter fare such as charred summer squash with ricotta cheese and a refreshing cucumber salad with Fresno peppers and mint. Finish off the meal on a hearty note with a bucket of fried chicken or the house-made mortadella hot dog with spicy pickles.
