THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Allumette Restaurant Review:

When former Allston Yacht Club owners Charles Kelly and Bill DiDonna invited whiz-kid chef Miles Thompson (Animal, Son of a Gun) for a summer pop-up (The Vagrancy Project), they weren’t expecting to reinvent their entire concept to showcase his inventive talents. But happily for Echo Park, they did --- creating the neighborhood’s first true destination restaurant. Avant-garde comfort food is not a bad description for Thompson’s beautiful dishes that seduce one’s palate at every turn. His visionary seasonal riffs are as virtuosic as Miles Davis. Velvety ankimo is brightly punctuated with umeboshi ponzu and sea grapes. Crisp soft shell crab tempura, nuanced with miso rémoulade, nectarine and lovage, is dramatically sculpted and strewn with flowers. Piquant Szechuan pork dumplings mingle with cured salmon roe and tarragon, and cavatelli with uni ragù and English pea purée is verdantly soulful. Deconstructed, long-braised short rib pho comes nestled in fresh Vietnamese herbs. But we think the most distinctive dish could be vinegar-roasted turnips with brown rice, grilled asparagus, blackberries and apricot harissa. Finish with dark chocolate ganache with green tea meringue, chicory crisp and brioche cream. The room is elegant but casual, sporting a long, lively bar with attractive locals; Serena Herrick’s artisanal cocktail menu complements the food, as does a well-chosen, affordable wine list that offers spot-on pairings for tasting menus.
