THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Appetito Cal-Italian Restaurant Review:

This charming deli-bistro, a project from restaurant professionals Patrick Service and John Shay, is located in a postage stamp-size mini mall just off Highway 111. The large indoor space features industrial elements like concrete floors, exposed ductwork and white subway tiles but the wood walls, tables and chairs bring a warm, rustic feel. Booths and banquette seating line the sides, while a couple tables have been placed together in the center of the room to create a communal vibe. There's also a bar with a TV as well as a patio out front with a fire pit. From behind the counter, chefs make fresh pasta, slice meat and create sandwiches. Diners place their orders inside at the counter, which also features a display case of imported meats and cheeses as well as Appetito's handmade pastas available for purchase (there are several gluten-free pasta options, too). Italian meatballs made with fennel-free sausage, just like in Italy, are a nice starter. Pillow-like ricotta gnocchi is served with a walnut-pesto sauce. Grilled eggplant includes a fried egg, which makes it that much more tasty. From the panini section, the signature porchetta sandwich pairs particularly well with Coachella Valley Brewing Co.'s Appetito Ale --- no surprise since it was brewed especially for the restaurant with that dish in mind. Rounding out the offerings are pizzette, specials and sides such as cheesy garlic bread. For dessert, choose between the tiramisu profiteroles or house-made gelato. Coffee is supplied by Koffi, the locally owned mini-chain of java joints that roasts their own beans. (One of the locations happens to be next door.) There's also a selection of draft beers, wines by the glass or quartino, Negronis and a few frozen cocktails to boot.
