: Assaggi’s room, above a pub, has an elegant simplicity about it, the floor-to-ceiling windows looking out over a leafy Notting Hill residential street. Bare floorboards combine with walls decorated with square canvases of strong colors. The cooking, however, is the focus. It all starts, as it should, with seasonal, fresh ingredients. Try favourites like the duo of foie gras parfait and escalope with a tart wild berry compote, plenty of the freshest pastas, or sashimi of red mullet to start. Move on to rib-eye of beef (for two) with white truffle butter or the fresh fish of the day. Daily specials keep the regulars coming back for more. For dessert, the famous flourless chocolate cake with ice cream, which has become an Assaggi classic, comes highly recommended. The wine list's loyalty is to Italy, with good and unusual effect, and you’ll find some treasures. Ask if you don’t know your Italian regional wines. Service is charming, yet matter-of-fact. |
