Toque-wearing, Lebanon-born Rihab Aris’ Lebanese and French-influenced cuisine (primarily vegetarian) is best described as clean and fresh, and her charming restaurant has been a Milwaukee favorite since its opening in 1991. Begin with Aris’ signature appetizers of warm pita bread and hummus dip, baba ghanouj, or a bowl of carrot soup. As for entrées, there’s couscous with lamb served with a Mediterranean salad and vegetables, or the poulet basquais (cooked tomatoes, green and red peppers, pieces of chicken breast and fresh garlic on rice) also served with a Mediterranean salad. If you have room for dessert, either go Lebanese-style and order the baklava or French with the crème au chocolate, a sinfully creamy chocolate mousse. Aris also sells her own label of gourmet foods, which include hummus dip, baba ghanouj and tabbouleh that grace the shelves of nearly 300 of the area’s supermarkets and delis.
