31st Union Restaurant Review:

Bright, clean and local describes the food at this small corner eatery dedicated to all that California has to offer. Reclaimed barn planks on the wall, polished concrete floors and metal conduit pipe fixtures create an eco-chic feel, while a mix of communal and individual tables and a grape stake-fronted bar make for a friendly atmosphere appropriate for a casual date or group gathering. The heirloom tomato BLT uses butter-toasted bread to frame the sweetness of ripe tomatoes against the salty of thick sliced bacon and a delicate house-made mayonnaise. Small plates include three variations of deviled eggs that might leave someone fighting for the last one. Tomato bisque is so creamy it belies its vegan recipe. Smoked duck tacos and a grilled little gem salad are other typical offerings. The dessert list is short, but seasonal pocket pies hearken to the Pop Tarts of your youth. Wines by the glass and on tap, as well as a selection of beers, are sourced entirely from California. Happy hour from 5 p.m.-6:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and 10 p.m.-midnight Friday and Saturday, offers draft wine and beer and wallet-friendly bites.
