Alchemy Café is part of a comprehensive health and wellness center in downtown Santa Barbara. They participate in the "Farm Friendly Dining" program, whereby 25 percent of their foods are purchased directly from local farms and farmers markets. The menu shifts frequently, but the vegetarian and vegan options include wraps, soups and salads, including a popular kale salad. Entrées propose diverse dishes like the mung bean kitchari, a traditional Ayurvedic dish made with quinoa, fresh almond milk, steamed vegetables and spices. The eponymous Alchemy Roll puts something of a health-food spin on traditional Vietnamese spring rolls, with herb pesto and raw julienned vegetables filling the wrapper, a drizzle of mint sauce and a sprinkling of toasted sesame seeds completing the preparation. And lest you think healthy living precludes one from enjoying the dining experience, the café offers beer and wine, as well as desserts like a raw chocolate pie and house-made vanilla macaroons, all in an environment filled with natural building materials.
