THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Angler Restaurant Review:

About the restaurant: Joshua Skenes (Saison Hospitality) is one of the most acclaimed chefs in the Bay Area. His rise in the culinary world came with the opening of his San Francisco restaurant Saison in 2009. He is known for his meticulous sourcing of local and wild products, his creative technique, and for cooking almost entirely over an open wood fire. He debuted the seafood-focused hotspot Angler on San Francisco's Embarcadero in 2018, and quickly followed with the sister Angler in Los Angeles in the Beverly Center. Saison Hospitality Culinary Director Chef Paul Chung now oversees the restaurant.

The décor: Once you enter the restaurant it’s like you’ve gone down a watery rabbit hole and emerged in a moodily romantic fisherman’s lodge fathoms away. The massive open kitchen, flanked by bundles of fresh flowers and dried herbs, stars a cast of chefs manning the opulent 32-foot wood burning hearth.

Food & Wine: The food is cooked only over embers --- not flames --- so blazing almond wood is raked into a perpetual state of glow. It’s mesmerizing. Enjoy the fruits of its labor in the embered oysters with toasted chili butter and Meyer lemon to start, or whole fish (sea bream) with prickly ash or dry-aged strip with broken marrow and chimichurri for larger plates. There is an extensive wines-by-the-glass program, including selections from Saison Winery, plus craft cocktails.
