At this plaid-covered bastion of hearty pub fare, begin with some banger bits to accompany your Newcastle or maybe a bowl of smooth, rich “Cock-A-Leeky” soup. The shepherd’s pie makes a fine dinner, and you can take home the other half for lunch tomorrow. If you’re an aficionado of organ meat, the steak and kidney pie is sure to please. Just pace yourself, so you can finish your meal with the popular sticky toffee pudding. Keep an eye open for the annual Robert Burns Supper each January, when haggis and neeps are on the menu and bagpipers in full kilted regalia are on hand to raise Scottish spirits. Next door, with an entrance through the dining room, is the Piccadilly Shop, where you can stock up on imports of Devonshire clotted cream, blood pudding, Branston Pickle and Marmite.
