City Tavern Restaurant Review:

Ken Kaufman and Brian McKeaney, founders of neighboring venue Rush Street, know beer. In fact, at City Tavern they have created the first computerized draft system, with lines that run directly to three booths, allowing those guests to pour as much as desired --- to a preset limit per person. Brick and distressed wood adorn the walls, while large chalkboards display the menus and specials. A fairly large patio makes a nice seating area on warm nights, while quieter conversation can be enjoyed at the three small outdoor tables. The cheesy “poofs” (a softer, gourmet version of Cheetos made with manchego) make for a fun, albeit heavy, starter. Though entrées such as buttermilk fried chicken, crispy pork belly, and trout with warm potato salad are available, it’s the brew burger topped with pub cheese, mustard aïoli and a thick onion ring on a pretzel bun that’s most satisfying. A rustic apple tart is a rich conclusion to the meal. Wines are predominantly Californian in origin, but specialty beers like the Mikkeller Coffee IPA should not be missed.
