Clearman's North Woods Inn Restaurant Review:

This old-school steakhouse is a San Gabriel Valley institution that predates the upscale steakhouses and remains the source of some retro fun. The place resembles a mountain lodge and its sprawling roof is covered --- quite effectively, we might add --- with a heavy blanket of synthetic snow. The management is proud to proclaim that the huge sign out front was cut from a massive 1,000-year-old redwood tree. The restaurant's cheese bread --- you can find the proprietary spread in many supermarkets --- is legendary (and very good, despite being a bit soggy), and most regulars opt for the steaks, which are sizeable and respectable. All steak and seafood entrées include two salads, cheese bread and potato, which keeps costs reasonable. There’s a basic wine list and cocktails, and most folks finish with a chocolate-rum or blueberry sundae. With its timbered walls and Tiffany-style lamps, this old-timer is a blast from the past. Also located at 540 N. Azusa Ave., Covina, 626-331-7444; and 14305 Firestone Blvd., La Mirada, 714-994-4590.
