Danji Restaurant Review:

This Hell’s Kitchen/Theater District restaurant is a surprise: it’s a destination in an area largely void of such establishments. That’s because talented chef Hooni Kim, late of Daniel and Masa, cooks up well-executed and creative Korean cuisine at this 36-seat venue. The menu is divided by “traditional” and “modern,” and both sides have some spectacular tapas-style dishes. Bulgogi sliders, with a soft bun, are a great place to start before moving on to spicy “DMZ” stew, a hearty mishmash of ingredients, including spam and noodles, in a spicy red sauce. The “KFC” Korean chicken wings are better than anything you’ll find in Korea Town and kimchi bacon paella is textural and taste bliss. Tofu has a ginger scallion dressing, and braised Black Angus short rib is an option, too. Conclude a meal here with black sesame ice cream. There are several bottles of soju and Korean beer to wash it all down, as well as a decently priced wine list.
