Down Home Diner Restaurant Review:

About the restaurant: Jack McDavid, a local chef who was preaching farm to table long before it came into vogue, is behind this nifty diner tucked away in a corner of Reading Terminal Market. Its name says it like it is---homey and comfortable. Start with a breakfast of red-eye gravy with biscuits and ham, or poached eggs with Philly's own trademark scrapple.

Food & Drinks: At lunchtime, stop shopping long enough to come back and sample the black-eyed peas and hog jowl soup, and move on to Granny's meatloaf with mashed potatoes. There's Carolina pulled pork or pecan-crusted catfish along with fried chicken. And give yourself time to shop the market purveyors. Check out the beautifully presented produce, baked goods, meats and fish. Browse among the cookbooks or crafts, candies and cheeses. For dessert, wander down to the stand where they sell another Philly original, Bassett's ice cream.
