Highland Grill Restaurant Review:


Owners Stephanie Shimp and David Burley have a good time with American diner standards at this cozy Highland Park restaurant. We like the mismatched glassware and the terry cloth towel napkins, which announce to the world that comfort reigns supreme. But even though the Highland Grill dishes out breakfast and burgers, the owners have given each recipe a playful, contemporary twist: egg salad aromatic with curry, while meatloaf gets served up with herbed spinach and garlic mashed potatoes, for example. The Elvis burger is a “king”-size beef patty topped with thick, smoked bacon, cheddar, tart pickles and a magic ingredient: roasted garlic mayo. This remains a perennial fave as does Andrew's Killer Waffle, which is prepared with caramelized bananas, hot syrup and whipped cream that’s lavished atop. Check the chalkboard on the wall for the night's specials, which might be as simple as chili or a more exotically prepared grilled tuna steak.
