When Mary Canales, former pastry chef of Chez Panisse, set out to open an ice cream shop on College Avenue in Berkeley, it was clear it would be something special. Now it’s hard to imagine a time before Ici's peanut butter ice cream sandwiches, persimmon ice cream and lime sherbet were available. Canales and crew also make elegant ice cream bombes and a host of non-frozen treats such as candied tangerine peel and toffee chocolate almonds. Be prepared to wait in a long line that can ratchet up even the most eager appetite for ice cream.
