Get in line to order at the counter, and request a cappuccino or serve yourself a cup of strong Peet’s Coffee while you wait for a table to open up. This egalitarian breakfast and lunch spot may not offer waiter service, but the food rates “gourmet.” French toast comes in many guises, none better than with brandy-glazed apples, with slivers of the tart fruit contrasting nicely with the pure maple syrup. You’ll also find proper Irish oatmeal, pancakes stacked high, and eggs Benedicts. And for those with smaller appetites, look to the daily changing display cases full of treats like fresh-baked lemon scones and blueberry streusel muffins. Soups, salads and sandwiches comprise the lunch menu for later arrivals. Take advantage of the patio seating out front and on the side on warm-weather days.
