Johnny's Po-Boys Restaurant Review:

Opened by Johnny and Betty De Grusha in 1950, Johnny's Po-Boys has proven staying power. A long line of hungry diners becoming fast friends in the small, brightly lit storefront signals that you're in the right spot. The simple atmosphere relies for its kitsch on red-and-white-checked tablecloths and a menu displayed on the far wall. Its cornucopia of classic choices attracts French Quarter workers and visitors alike to feast on lean boiled ham, well-done roast beef in garlicky gravy, and crisply fried oysters or shrimp among a wide variety of fillings enclosed in soft-crusted French bread. The chili may not float in San Antonio, but the red beans and rice are respectable. Hearty, bounteous breakfasts focus on egg dishes, biscuits and muffins. Wash down lunch or breakfast with a cold beer. For dessert, try the true 1950s-style banana split with everything imaginable on top, including gummy bears.
