It's easy to forget you're on a tropical island in the middle of the Pacific at this local steakhouse favorite. Built in 1927, Makawao Steak House is located in the sleepy, rustic town of Makawao, nestled along the slopes of Haleakala Crater. While temperatures dip significantly upcountry, the restaurant provides a cozy lodge ambience with fireplaces to warm your spirits. Makawao offers choice-grade Midwestern grain-fed beef, with cuts like New York strip, top sirloin, prime rib and filet mignon. Red meat alternatives include lobster tail, fresh island fish, pork tenderloin, lamb chops and rosemary chicken. But as all locals know, dinner is not complete without a homemade dessert, like the famous Kona coffee mud pie or the delectable rum cake with caramelized pecans, served warm with vanilla bean ice cream.
