Mediterranea Restaurant & Bakery Restaurant Review:

A historic storefront spot makes a likely location for a casual, neighborhood restaurant, and Mediterranea Restaurant & Bakery takes the assignment a step further by going all gluten-free. Salmon-hued walls and moderate lighting craft a warm ambience, and ceiling baffles and padded elements on one wall absorb sound so that even when busy, the place has a noise level that doesn't impede conversation with one's table mates. Start with a plate of feta-stuffed turkey meatballs in a spicy thick tomato sauce or caponata-filled peppers. Beef is not served, but you'll find plenty of seafood, chicken and multiple vegetable-based dishes. We liked the gently grilled scallops surrounding a mound of shaved fennel and grapefruit. And the kale Caesar with jalapeño cheddar corn croutons is a winner. For dessert, go with the bread pudding, although the panna cotta made with Greek yogurt and sporting a well of pomegranate juice in its center makes a good second call. The wine list supplies a number of appropriate selections from around the wine-producing world that will complement the food. Gluten-free and gluten-reduced beers are among the quaffs. A children's menu is available, and neighborhood parents take advantage of it to bring the little ones. The upstairs patio is not wheelchair accessible.
