Even before Frenchmen Street in the Faubourg Marigny became an entertainment and restaurant hub, Mona's Cafe was packing them in. This Middle Eastern establishment shares space with a supermarket full of specialties from the eastern Mediterranean. The place is bright and airy, especially at midday, when the simple, but practical, blond-wood chairs and tables look their best. First-timers are wise to try the sampler plate: baba ghanouj, grape leaves, tabbouleh, falafel and kibbeh. Traditional dishes --- falafel, gyros, baba and hummus --- are authentically prepared. Marinades and seasoning blends are well composed, too. Lamb chops and kebabs have just the right char, and are made with fresh, quality ingredients. Baklava and similar classical sweets from this part of the world grace the dessert menu. Everything tastes even better with a refreshing Lebanese iced tea, made with rosewater and pine nuts. Best of all, the prices will put a grin on any skinflint's face. Mona's Cafe does not serve wine or alcohol. Other locations.
