Old Hickory Pit's wood paneled dining rooms lend the right touch of rustic charm, and the friendly, efficient servers will call you “Hon,” adding another touch of local color. Virtually a Western Kentucky specialty, burgoo is a hearty stew traditionally made with game (squirrel is usually omitted these days) and whatever vegetables were growing in the garden. Pork and chicken dominate today. And since Owensboro is the epicenter for Western Kentucky style barbecue --- that is, mutton --- you need to try some when you are here. Old Hickory Pit serves the moist, pungent meat pulled, chopped, sliced or even in a plateful of tender, fatty ribs. If mutton is not your style, the pork, beef and chicken barbecue plates are also first-rate. Barbecue beans, slaw and a very popular mac ‘n’ cheese are among the sides. Fruit cobblers are the specialty desserts. No alcohol.
