Rules Restaurant Review:

Rules opened its doors in 1798 and during its history has seen the great and the good, the famous and infamous and latterly, tourists in droves, pass through its doors. It has a décor that shouts “history” in a stained-glass, wood-paneled, walls-hung-with-cartoons way, and you just know that Charles Dickens ate here. The owner, John Mayhew, usefully, owns an estate from which much of the exemplary meat and game comes from. The cooking is of the kind to reinstate Britain’s reputation for topnotch ingredients sympathetically cooked. Go for whatever is in season---ptarmigan, wild duck, pheasant, veal, all served with trad British accompaniments like proper game chips, quince marmalade and well-cooked root vegetables. British savouries are here in force, or order tried and tested puddings like crumbles and fruit pies. The wine list is good, the service amazingly friendly.
