Shiro Restaurant Review:

Chef-owner Hideo Yamashiro has a good eye for ultra-fresh fish, as well as the ability of an accomplished French saucier, with results that are often compelling. He offers a handful of classically inspired dishes, including starters like lobster salad with asparagus and white truffle oil, salmon carpaccio with dill and pink peppercorns, and scallop mousse with black truffle sauce. Entrées change often, but might include New Zealand lamb chops in a Pinot Noir reduction as well as authentic Asian fare such as his signature sizzling whole catfish with ponzu sauce and fresh cilantro. Chef Yamashiro's attention to detail is apparent in desserts, too, such as a fresh fruit crème brûlée and an apple tart made with puff pastry. The wine list is moderately priced with some interesting boutique labels represented, in addition to many seafood-friendly whites from Germany, France and Austria. There’s also a full bar, classic cocktails and a few innovative martinis. The double-storefront space is spare and stylish --- though chairs could be more comfortable --- and this is one restaurant in South Pasadena that has a truly regional following.
