Mercifully, Awful Arthur’s doesn’t live up to its self-effacing name; it has clawed its way up when it comes to crowd-pleasing seafood eateries. Like its mates in other cities, this spot, done up in a whitewashed breeziness that makes you feel like you’ve kicked back on a palm-fringed vacation, prides itself on its raw bar. You can’t miss the offerings of oysters, middle neck clams, mussels, crawfish, shrimp and snow crab legs, straight up or in combo platters; upon slurping down, avail yourself of the paper towel rolls on each table. Landlubbers, be they “buoys” or “gulls” (as designated on the restroom doors), can find rib-eyes, blackened chicken, pasta, burgers, and North Carolina-style barbecue and the Awful Sub (ham, smoked turkey, bacon, Swiss and cheddar baked on a sub roll with honey-mustard vinaigrette). Finish your meal with Key lime pie or hot fudge lava cake. Service is as casual as the décor, the kind where your jeans-clad waitress sits down at your booth to answer questions, but it’s right on point. Other locations.
