Disregard the fact that it’s in a La Mesa shopping center --- Banbu Sushi Bar & Grill is all about sleek style and seriously good food that’s also fairly affordable. The outdoor fire pit calls for sexy cocktails like the Cherry Blossom Cosmo and a romantic evening. Inside the modern bistro with Zen motifs, sushi master Hiro San rocks the raw fish. Guests nibble on filet mignon yakisoba or baked langoustine rolls. Appetizers like piquant Singapore-style chicken wings, Kurobuta pork gyoza, and spiced lamb chops with apricot and pear chutney tempt. Another roll, the Baja Norte, marries spicy yellowfin with jalapeño, cilantro and cucumber. Rice bowls, udon and artistic salads round out the extensive and creative menu. Ingredients are fresh and often organic. The high energy room adds to the overall experience.
