Arranged around the stairwell, all of the first floor of the restaurant is visible as you walk in, although some areas are separated by glass partitions. More solid walls are painted a warm terra cotta. The clientele represents all ages and assorted occupations. While generally pleasant, service may be as stretched as the intervals between courses. But the cooking is reassuringly dependable, majoring in pastas and main dishes like char-grilled marinated chicken with new potatoes, chicory and mustard dressing, or sea bass with courgettes in a lemon, parsley and caper dressing. The busy downstairs café serves the same antipasti and pasta as upstairs. The Italian wines are carefully chosen and a good value. Set 2-course meal £15.50, 3 courses £18.50.
