Despite being outnumbered and underequipped, the Mexican Army led by General Ignacio Zaragoza triumphed over the French in the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. Each year on Cinco de Mayo (Spanish for "Fifth of May"), revelers raise margaritas and celebrate this underdog victory.
