Black Strap BBQ Restaurant Review:
Black Strap BBQ was the first barbecue joint in Montreal to import its own Southern smoker. When the Memphis-style slow-cooked brisket, ribs, pulled pork and smoked turkey proved so popular that the place needed to expand, a second one was bought. Jerk chicken wings, chili cheese fries and whole chickens have since been added to the menu. Most guests sit at the bar or communal tables stocked with rolls of paper towers and two bottles of homemade hot sauce and sweet barbecue sauce. They order either enormous pork sandwiches or combination platters of all the meats served with coleslaw, a dinner roll and a choice of fries, braised greens, barbecued beans, fried mac ‘n’ cheese, chili or the popular burnt ends poutine made with tasty charred brisket tips. Even vegetarians have an option: the patty-mac, a sandwich made with two mac ‘n’ cheese patties, greens, slaw, onions and pickles. Like its Southern barbecue brethren, the restaurant opens for lunch and closes when the food runs out (don’t arrive after 8 p.m. expecting brisket).
