This two-room, dimly-lit jazz joint in the area between a large university campus and a questionable neighborhood is a Cleveland institution. Things don’t get going till after 9 p.m. here, but by 11 p.m. it’s standing-room-only. The place draws a very mixed clientele: college students from Case Western Reserve University; docs in training (and scrubs) from nearby University Hospitals; suits from the ’burbs; out-of-town tourists. All come for the soul-satisfying music---some of Cleveland’s best jazz musicians are regulars on the tiny stage---and for the far-from-heart-healthy items on the too-cute menu. Getz’s clams, Duke’s dip and fries, or a split order of bones make good starters. If you’re hungry, follow with Sarah, Ella, Miles or Billy’s burgers, or the perch dinner. Lighter dishes include Artie’s eggplant Parmesan and the spinach salad. The cheesecake and apple pie make excellent late-night snacks.
