Chef Zak Pelaccio was definitely on to something during his tenure at 5 Ninth, where he served up quasi-architectural cuisine dubbed “New York Modern.” Inspired by the cultural influence of world immigration on the Big Apple, his creations were multi-ethnic and often used ingredients found at green markets in the city. So it’s no surprise that his first post-5 Ninth move would be dark wood-bedecked Borough Food & Drink, whose concept is using New York City ingredients to create dishes inspired by the five boroughs. The casual comfort food-like menu includes many hits---deep-fried pickles, fried feta and arugula, ribs covered with a sweet soy chili glaze, Balkan beef sausages, wild mushroom risotto with heirloom garlic and Parmigiano-Reggiano, and buttermilk-dipped fried chicken. It's a flavorful NYC tour that's much better (and faster) than shlepping on the MTA.
