THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Brett's Cafe Americain Restaurant Review:
Brett Knobel's low-key, upscale, smoke free spot decorated with food-related art was a pioneer in a neighborhood that's finally catching up, and it continues to attract laid-back regulars. They flock here for moderately priced meals which draw on Asia and Latin America for inspiration. A potato taco typifies the appetizers, while grilled flank steak in sesame-ginger sauce with wilted spinach is an entrée mainstay. In truth, though, you could live on the wonderful bread and complimentary black olives, paired with a modestly priced red wine and followed by a dessert sampler for two. Your pick of five desserts includes terrific crème brûlée, satin-y homemade ice creams and old-fashioned layer cakes. Try to get a booth. Service can be low-key to a fault, but Brett works the room, smoothing over problems.
