When we can no longer resist our lust for solid, rib-sticking Hungarian fare, we drive up the coast to Solana Beach, where a pair of old railway dining cars in a nondescript shopping center house Budapest Express. The antique plates and scarves arranged around the walls are an attempt at atmosphere, and if there were countryside rolling by outside, we might find the setting seductive. As it is, we settle for such satisfying dishes as the unusual, deep-fried pork meat loaf served with rice and beets, or standards like chicken paprikash and melt-in-the-mouth beef goulash. The apricot or walnut-stuffed crêpes are a must for dessert.
