Altro Paradiso Restaurant Review:
Located in west SoHo, this 75-seat restaurant is helmed by chef Ignacio Mattos and Thomas Carter, who have wowed the fooderati (as well as the Obamas) at nearby Estela. Now they’re trying to do the same with classic (and some rather creative) Italian fare. The simply bedecked but chic space is loud, and everyone from bankers to bohemians are squeezed in, elbow to elbow, twirling al dente tagliolini with black truffles and munching on cabbage and ricotta stuffed ravioli sprinkled with walnuts. Uni sitting on buttered crostini is a transcendent starter, while seared octopus with salsa verde and chickpeas is tough and chewy. Desserts lean toward the inventive side with Campari sorbetto and fig gelato. The wine list is lengthy and features some affordable bottles, including the very good 1985 Portuguese Frei Joao Reserva.
