This innovative café has a well-deserved devoted following, both by locals and food enthusiasts looking for good contemporary fare with a strong French foundation at prices that are hard to believe. Starters include lobster-and-salmon ravioli, escargots persillade and sweetbreads in a balsamic sauce. Entrée choices range from roasted monkfish served on saffron shrimp risotto to steak au poivre and roasted chicken with pommes frites. If you really want to save money, we suggest you order an entrée and add soup or salad for only $1 more. You can also bring your own bottle of wine, since the corkage fee is a mere $2. Look for martinis and other cocktails, and a serviceable, reasonable French/California wine list. Housed in a cottage reputed to be the former home of actor/comedian Bud Abbott, this is a cozy, casually elegant dining venue. Be sure to call well in advance for weekend reservations.
