THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Cafe Manhattan Restaurant Review:
Cafe Manhattan isn't much like Manhattan. It's more like a diner in, say, Uniondale, Long Island, with glass bricks, black-and-white decor and Coca-Cola memorabilia. Lots of locals here, guys with baseball caps and baby slings, families having supper out on a weeknight. The food is entirely in keeping with the decor, chunky coffee mugs and chocolate malts. Soups are next door to homemade, if not right there; the chili, while it falls into the overly tomato-ed category, is surprisingly spicy for such a middle-of-the-road place. The menu includes the St. Louis classic sandwich, braunschweiger and onion, here with lettuce, tomato and a Thousand Island-like sauce, which actually adds something. Burgers are safely reliable, but why not try a meat loaf sandwich, fat and juicy, and some hand-cut fries?
