Their avowed aim is to ’demystify the auction business’, and the refurbishment of Phillips’ second London saleroom does a good job. Part of the demystifying process is to include a coffee bar that serves lunch in the gift shop where you can take a cappuccino as a break from the heady (and often nerve wracking), business of bidding. You’re not that removed, there’s a glass wall between you and the adjoining sale room. Lot numbers are relayed over the PA so you don’t miss the action while snacking on sandwiches and salads.
