Once on the cutting edge of San Diego dining, California Cuisine has been around for over a quarter of a century, and still maintains its reputation as a destination restaurant. The menu changes often and uses in-season, locally grown produce---something that was revolutionary in this area back in California Cuisine's early days. Appetizers have included Point Reyes Blue cheese, fig and apple spread thinly atop flatbread, and mussels in apple brandy, Parmesan and leek cream. Hearts of palms, olives, feta and almonds decorate fresh field greens, all drizzled with a light sherry vinaigrette. The filet mignon with mashed potatoes is a hit thanks to a lively Gorgonzola-Pinot Noir glaze while pistachio-crusted Scottish salmon is nicely matched with blood orange, beets, arugula and du Puy lentils. Be sure to ask for a table outside on the charming patio; the inside dining room is a bit cold (figuratively and literally) for our tastes.
