THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED California Street Delicatessen & Cafe Restaurant Review:
Executive chef John Beardsley has worked with consulting chef Joyce Goldstein to create something that San Francisco needed---a place to get authentic Jewish comfort food. Start with silky chopped chicken liver mixed with morsels of hardboiled egg and topped with crunchy bits of chicken skin. “Grandma Rae’s sweet & sour stuffed cabbage” is the real deal as is the matzo ball soup---clear, flavorful chicken broth dotted with fluffy matzo balls. Lunch offerings include smoked fish platters, burgers and hot dogs, hot and cold sandwiches, salads and desserts. Dinner plates feature heartier fare like chicken fricassée, Niman Ranch braised brisket and Hungarian veal goulash. We love the Reuben with lean but juicy corned beef, melted Swiss cheese, sauerkraut and Russian dressing piled high on some of the best rye bread in town. Wash it all down with a traditional egg cream, which contains no egg or cream at all; however when the ingredients (milk, seltzer and U-Bet chocolate syrup) are properly mixed, an egg-white-like foam forms on top. Anyone with a hankering for the great Jewish delicatessens of New York will feel right at home at this California Street café, right down to the black and white checkerboard floor and classic marble counter.
