Callaloo Caribbean Kitchen Restaurant Review:
Located in a blink-and-miss-it building in inland eastern Long Beach, this restaurant fits the very definition of a “hole-in-the-wall” eatery. Dark red banquettes and Caribbean-inspired paintings fill the single-room dining space, and a white dry-erase board is scribbled with the kitchen’s daily specials. The decidedly low-key setting is brightened by Trinidadian dishes that are big on complex flavors and spices that don't overwhelm the palate. The signature selection is the roti, a thin, rolled-up flatbread stuffed with curried garbanzo beans, potatoes and a protein like beef, shrimp or even goat. It's worth pairing with a side of plantains or a bowl of soup. There are also plenty of combination items that touch on classic Caribbean tastes, such as jerk chicken. On specific weekends, the restaurant serves up a special Trinidadian sandwich called “bake and shark.”
