Flickering candlelight casts shadows along the muraled walls of this East Village wine bar while long, sturdy wooden tables and chairs and racks of wine bottles give Cellar 58 a casual rustic charm. It makes for the ideal venue for lingering over the international wine list comprising the world's major, minor and up-and-coming varietals, vineyards and vintages. The menu, reminiscent of provincial Italian cooking, includes small dishes that work as good accompaniments to a glass or a bottle of wine. Try the crispy prosciutto and mozzarella torta al testo flatbread with the Merlot-Cabernet Sauvignon blend from Bulgaria. Another option among the small bites is the salmon tartare which pairs nicely with the Sancerre Sauvignon Blanc. Main dishes are created with wine pairings in mind as well, with gourmet twists on classics like the lasagna with porcini mushrooms and black truffle pâté, rich and complex, and enhanced with a glass of Valpolicella Classico DOC Viviani.
