Part country café, part bakery, all California comfort food, Chamomile is a welcome culinary option in downtown Carpinteria. The service, however, is notoriously lacking---to such a degree that it can overwhelm the good food. Most everything here is made from scratch, including the tempting oversize loaves of bread, cookies and other sweet treats on display in glass cases by the register. Try a Savannah chocolate chew---you’ll never know they use ground nuts in lieu of flour. Teas are handpicked, and a local purveyor roasts the coffee beans weekly. As for the food, most entrées come with unique sides like grilled broccoli or thinly sliced sweet potatoes, adding a healthy boost to the homemade soups, sandwiches and wraps offered. Many dishes are gluten free and vegan, including the tofu panang and an interesting sweet potato and portobello mushroom quesadilla.
