The deep, hearty, roasted flavors of provincial France make Chanterelle one of Boston’s most attractive bistros. Petite as a cornichon and five steps below the retail madness of the Back Bay, the booths of this brick-walled dining room are ideal for a tete a tete. Boeuf bourgignon is so aromatic and invigorating it might be better off as a family dinner in December. Steak au poivre is admirably pepper-hot and decadent in a brandy cream sauce. Don’t expect imagination or fireworks, but do join the contented and couple-heavy crowd for the likes of duck liver pâté, bouillabaisse, and stuffed trout that almost always leave a smile behind.
