An upscale, modern Thai restaurant and a street-style noodle bar comfortably share both floors of this trendy North Beach hot spot. Giant gilded Buddhas on each level watch over diners, while the carvings, masks and dramatic, colorful silk lanterns that adorn the space showcase the work of craftspeople in Northern Thailand. The Monkey Bar specializes in the street fare of Bangkok, such as imperial and spring rolls, wok stir-fries, soups, salads and noodles. You’ll find similar items at Citizen Thai, along with fancier entreés such as whole snapper with roasted chili-cashew sauce and grilled pork served with sticky rice and mango salad. Check out fun presentations like roasted duck curry served in a hollowed-out pineapple, and pumpkin curry with chicken served in a pumpkin, which also happen to be two of the more unique and enticing dishes on the menu. The food, while not groundbreaking, is satisfying and nicely prepared using fresh, local ingredients. There are also plenty of choices for vegetarians. Efficient, non-intrusive service, a creative cocktail list and a small but well-equipped wine list round out the experience.
