Carolyn Ellis, who built an empire on ladies who lunch, has created a sunny café for downtown workers. Housed at the back of the elegant Bentley Projects, this crisp space captures the Zeitgeist---with a concrete floor and minimalist IKEA chairs---without seeming cold or stark. As good-looking as the place may be, it's the fresh-tasting food---and Ellis's legendary baked goods---that people line up for. Breakfast-goers enjoy the freshly baked croissants and great granola. The lunch crowd opts for the City Chop (a chopped salad with smoked turkey, salami, soppressata, provolone, olives and garbanzos); or the curried chicken salad. Among compelling sandwiches, we like the PLT, a prosciutto riff on BLT. Save room for a chewy chocolate-toffee cookie or coconut cream cake.
