THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Claypool's BBQ Restaurant Review:

Former country singer Philip Claypool missed the barbecue of his hometown of Memphis so much that he bought a smoker and opened a restaurant. Years of longing, visiting Tennessee barbecue joints, and cooking in Napa passed between the first unrequited craving and the opening of Claypool's on Steiner Street's restaurant row. Claypool's southern roots are apparent in the sweet-and-spicy vinegar-spiked sauce cloaking the moist, tender piles of pulled pork or dark meat chicken, both of which can be had as a sandwich or a platter accompanied by whiskey beans and Arkanslaw---a lightly creamy jumble of finely shredded cabbage. Years on the West Coast must have inspired the freshness of the smoked salmon sandwich complete with house-marinated cucumbers and whipped cream cheese. Southern hospitality abounds from the friendly service, to the family photos on the walls, to the Thursday night live music featuring Philip Claypool.
