This high-ceilinged, circular open-air restaurant sits on the beach, offset from the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel. The views of the ocean and sunset are stunning, especially on the wraparound terrace. Coast Grille puts an emphasis on local ingredients, which is most evident in the monthly-changing "locavore series" prix-fixe menus themed around ingredients like Big Island bananas or chocolate. Start with oysters, Kona abalone or poke --- that Island favorite made of chopped raw fish, seaweed and seasonings. It can be difficult to decide on a particular fish among the main dishes, so take the pressure off by ordering the "seafood trio," which might feature Hawaiian mahi mahi, ahi and ono. Meanwhile, the grilled rib-eye appeals to carnivores. Make sure to order a glass of wine from the list, or one of the local beers or craft cocktails. There's also Kona coffee and an elaborate tea menu available. Finish off the evening with warm chocolate cake or the crème brûlée trio. The staff is super-friendly and efficient.
