THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Corney & Barrow Restaurant Review:
Corney & Barrow is a long-established wine merchant with a string of modern, stylish bars in the City. Its West End flagship opposite the English National Opera replaces the candles, dark wood panelling and cobwebs usually associated with wine bars with cool stone, leather and teak. Theres much hustle and bustle on the ground floor---as people rendezvous after work and reassemble after the shows---and not enough places to sit. Mid-evening its easier to study at leisure the marvellous list of 60 wines, 35 of which are sold by the glass. They are also helpfully grouped by grape variety and feature jaunty tasting notes. Downstairs is a clubby Champagne bar, while upstairs (and often unnoticed by the crowd below) an informal restaurant serves robust and flavoursome European food at reasonable prices---making it worth seeking out for a West-End meal without the usual outlay. A menu that changes monthly matches wines to four courses for £47, although the setting is not as plush as youd expect for a wine-led dinner. Branches throughout London.
