Decatur-founded Crescent Moon inhabits commodious "designer diner" digs outfitted with retro-50s Formica-topped tables and matching chairs. Breakfast, served all day, could feature hearty whole-wheat pancakes made from organic flour, good country ham, and omelets such as the pimento cheese-ham creation. The emphasis is on organic ingredients in many dishes, and stone-ground grits (the right stuff) for breakfast. Biscuits are terrific, and for a nominal up-charge may come with old-fashioned sausage gravy. For dinner, try hearty meatloaf, fried onion rings and mashed potatoes. New York-style cheesecake, with flavors that vary daily, and huge layer cakes are turned out at the Northlake location. This unit has a few tables outside on the sidewalk, serving mostly as a staging area for late-risers on Saturday and Sunday mornings, when the place gets busy.
