Forget about atmosphere. At Dao Son, it's all about the mounds of fresh, colorful, spicy food, ordered from a book-length menu filled with dishes so reasonably priced that we were all the more tempted to sample a wide variety. We enjoyed the cream of corn shrimp soup, a silken broth filled with plump shrimp and nutty corn kernels. The Vietnamese salad rolls in their lightly moistened rice paper wrappers are generously stuffed and served with a full-bodied peanut sauce. Don't miss the aromatic five-spice game hen, succulent meat accented with star anise, cinnamon, ginger, Szechwan pepper, fennel, lots of garlic and maybe a hint of lemongrass. The stir-fried tofu with eggplant has a sweet-yet-savory glaze and the sliced barbecued pork is tangy and tender. Dao Son keeps the quality consistently good, and the staff treats you like family. Add those low prices and its no wonder we keep coming back for more.
