Dargan's Irish Pub & Restaurant Restaurant Review:
Tucked in an alcove off downtown Santa Barbara’s busy Lower State Street, Dargan’s is more popular with drinkers than diners. The menu mixes traditional pub grub like shepherd's pie and Irish stew with American favorites such as Cobb salad, fried chicken and burgers. While the steak and Guinness pie may sound tempting, you’re better off with a creamy pint of straight Guinness. If you must eat, and can’t bear to order a burger in this Gaelic setting, opt for the Irish stew. Made with tender, flavorful lamb, it’s said to be the result of a recipe from a co-owner’s mother in the Old Country. The space is divided into two rooms: one for pool and pub, the other for dining. The busier the bar scene gets, the more the service falters on both sides. At the end of an alcohol-fueled evening, you can’t go wrong with the chocolate bread pudding, made with an Irish cream sauce and served à la mode. A second location in Ventura boasts nearly identical offerings.
